Beyond the Box
The Beyond the Box Certification (BTB Certification) is obtained by Tompkins County employers who engage in a one-year process in partnership with Ultimate Reentry Opportunity (URO) to become an employer who hires and retains people with past criminal justice system involvement. In working toward becoming Beyond the Box Certified, the employer commits to more than “banning the box,” or the process of eliminating the check box on job applications that ask candidates about their past criminal history. Rather, a Beyond the Box Employer (BTB Employer) commits to changing policies, management practices, and workplace culture so that it is truly inclusive and equitable toward employees with past criminal justice system involvement (hereafter, “people in reentry”). The employer also commits to integrating diversity, equity, and inclusion into the fabric of their workplace culture. Since people in reentry often hold multiple forms of marginalization (e.g., race, ethnicity, gender, LGBTQ+, and disability), becoming a Beyond the Box Certified Employer invariably benefits employees with any type of marginalization and ultimately uplifts all employees.
