Our Mission

URO is dedicated to helping people who have faced or are currently facing incarceration.  We are committed to policy changes and programs that support reintegration and reduce recidivism. We study the challenges to re-entry, organize Working Groups to create solutions, and gather partners and help direct funding to execute Re-entry Initiatives

We believe that change comes from within the community, for the community.

We invest in building relationships and trust as a foundation for Collective Impact

We prioritize partnership building across non-profits, government agencies, policy makers, academics and those impacted by incarceration.

Our work is guided by the North Star of Systemic Change

We believe that true, lasting change comes from integrating a perspective shift in the very framework of justice and incarceration. We lead a Community Book Read on generational trauma and healing, and explore the ways in which we are all impacted by the systems of white supremacy, racism, and incarceration that we exist within. We are rooted in studying and sharing the ways of healing trauma, of rebuilding community, of trusting our resilience, and of moving past our collective trauma into new ways of being in community with one another.

We acknowledge that changing systems - shifting hearts and minds in a community - is slow work.

It takes at least 10 years before the investments in relationships, conversations, partnerships and initiatives start to make themselves seen. This is deep, deep work, and like growing a garden, a lot must be planted and tended long before the flowers bloom.

We thank you for being on this journey with us.

“True systems change requires solutions to be embedded deeply enough

that they can self-perpetuate.”
